What is a turbocharger and how does it work in practice?
A turbocharger is a component of the supercharging system that uses exhaust gas energy to drive a rotor that compresses the air drawn into the engine. In practice, this increases the amount of oxygen in the cylinders by as much as 30–50% compared to a naturally aspirated engine of the same displacement. The result is higher torque available at lower RPMs and improved engine flexibility. This solution is commonly used in both diesel and turbocharged petrol engines, with compact designs like mini-turbochargers becoming increasingly common, particularly in 1.0–1.5 TSI, TCe, and EcoBoost engines.
