Throttle construction and operation
The throttle body, also known as a throttle valve, is a metal component located in the intake manifold that regulates the amount of air entering the combustion chamber. In petrol engines, its operation directly affects idle speed and torque, while in diesel engines (e.g., BMW E60 530d), it serves as an auxiliary valve for engine shutdown and emission control. The throttle body diameter in typical 3.0d engines ranges from 65 to 70 mm, and its control precision reaches 0.1 degrees.
What functions do throttles perform?
Throttle bodies play a key role in a vehicle's intake system: Airflow Control – The throttle valve opens and closes depending on the position of the gas pedal, controlling the amount of air delivered to the engine. Combustion support – Precise air dosing ensures an optimal fuel-air mixture ratio, which affects combustion efficiency. Emission Control – Modern throttle bodies work with sensors to help reduce harmful emissions. Thanks to the throttle valves, the engine runs smoothly, economically and in accordance with ecological standards.
Electronic throttle control
Modern electronic throttle bodies (so-called "drive-by-wire") have replaced traditional throttle cables. The system controls the valve opening angle using a TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) and a stepper motor, allowing for more precise management of the fuel-air mixture. In vehicles such as the BMW E87 or Mercedes W203, communication between the accelerator pedal and throttle body is digital, resulting in faster engine response and lower fuel consumption.
